On September 6, 2016, representatives from Arizona Sheriff’s Association (ASA), National Sheriff’s Association (NSA), Southwestern Border Sheriff’s Coalition (SWBSC), Western States Sheriffs’ Association (WSSA), Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels and Canyon County (Idaho) Sheriff Kieran Donahue met in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The focus of this meeting was to implement a program for Sheriffs throughout the United States to come to the Arizona border with their local media so that they can see firsthand the porous nature of the unsecure border. The purpose of the program is so that those Sheriffs and their media outlets can see firsthand how the cartels and drug smugglers are able to exploit the lack of border security and enforcement to smuggle drugs into the United States which ultimately end up in their communities thousands of miles from the border. The ultimate goal is to make the citizens in their communities aware of the fact that the unsecured border is a direct cause of dangerous drugs ending up in their communities endangering our citizens and our youth and that the border issues are not just a concern for border Sheriffs, but for all communities and law enforcement across the nation.
