Arizona Sheriffs Attend WSSA — Mascher Becomes President

On Wednesday March 8, 2017, Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher became President of the Western States Sheriffs Association (WSSA) at its annual training conference in Reno, NV. President Mascher stated, “I am honored to be selected by my peers to lead this organization and I look forward to working with my fellow Board of Directors members throughout the coming year.” Sheriff Mascher has been an active member of WSSA for years. He began his leadership role with the Association when he was elected to the Board of Directors as Sergeant At Arms in 2013. Nine of his peers from across Arizona were on hand to witness his swearing in and participate in a variety of conference training opportunities including: Mobile Technology for Community Outreach, Mental Health in Detention Facilities, Patron Saints of Mexican Drug Cartels and some case study explorations about stand offs in Oregon and the North Dakota Pipeline Protests. Sheriffs from all of the western states were in attendance at the conference and wearing purple shirts to promote the Man Up Crusade against domestic violence. Arizona’s sheriffs also participated in discussions on the U.S. Forest Service’s travel management plans and the challenges sheriffs across the west are facing in keeping lands open to the public. Homeland security was also a dominant focus of the conference. Arizona’s sheriffs are poised to offer great insight regarding border security and the safety of our communities as they work the front lines daily. The WSSA was formed over 22 years ago by sheriffs who felt there were unique issues in the country’s western states. The organization now has 16 member states and over 300 member sheriffs and is focused on issues common to western states and interactions with federal agencies and federal and state land and resource managers.
